Going To Press

There have been a few pieces of media coverage in the last week or so. Perhaps you might be interested in reading this.

Or in today's SMH's Essential, a shot of One Red Robin's 'Matryoshka', and details of how crafters/artists can get involved in Handmade Help. (I don't have a scanner, sorry folks for the dodgy shot!)

If you know anyone who's handy with a needle and thread, encourage them to thread up and get stitching too.

Tick Tock It's Toy O'Clock:: CSU - Wagga

.

Peri from Charles Sturt University in Wagga emailed us to let us in on her highly-commendable, super-ace plan.

Here's to prove that from little things big things grow (and we have the perfect toon for that if you're in the mood for some music).

Peri told us - and we're sure a lot of us can agree - that while uni students don't have a lot of cash, they do have a bit of spare time they can donate. So she organised a craft day for Friday 27 February to make as many made-with-love toys and bags as possible in one day. These are to be sent to the kids as 'distraction' bags.

And here's where it gets even better. Her uni got wind of her grand idea and has contributed by donating other items such as colouring pencils, books & skipping ropes that can now be put in the bags too! Genius.

Peri and her mum have kindly donated a lot of their own stash, and very generously Addicted to Fabric in Canberra is donating more fabric and stuffing for the toys.

So Peri's idea of creating a couple of toys has grown into a big day of sewing, stitching, stuffing.

If you live in Wagga, go to CSU or perhaps you'd just like to join in, check out the poster above for details.

WA TOY DRIVE TO HELP VICTORIA'S YOUNG BUSH FIRE VICTIMS PLAY TO HEAL

A second Christmas for children affected by the bush fires in regional Victoria is being organised by Western Australia based kids cross-media company, artistsAWAKEproductions. While current relief focuses on providing basic services like food, clothing, shelter, and medical aid to people affected by the disaster, we are calling upon the people of WA to help provide for the special needs of children. The "Play to Heal" Initiative was commenced after consulting with Government and Non-Government Organisations in Victoria to ensure donations would help the victims and could be distributed without diverting resources from critical needs.

The donations of new or near-new toys and games for ages 0 to 10 are being collected from two locations:

13 Glyde Street, Mosman Park (Mosman Video) - 9 to 15 February

7 Amersham Crescent, East Butler (East Butler Primary School) - 9 to 13 February (last collection 3pm TODAY)

It is important that toys and games be in new or excellent condition and not too large or heavy so they can be easily shipped. Donations should not require electricity and batteries should be included if necessary. Ideal items include board games, deflated sports balls, soft toys, cards, pads of paper and crayons/pencils.

For more information about the toy drive, please email: info@artistsawake.com

Solemn Request

Sadly, thoughts are turning to funerals, and here's where a lot of us can help. Rotary are looking for donations of black/dark suits, dark coloured dresses, shoes, and I guess things that would be appropriate for children to wear to a funeral.

We're waiting for Rotary to call back with details of where to send donations to. As soon as we've heard back, we'll update and let you know.

But for now, if you could please go through your wardrobe and see if there's something that you could donate that would be ace. I'm quite sure that wraps, pashminas etc would be gratefully accepted too, given the unpredictable weather.

Handmade Help - Don't Want To Auction?

.

Perhaps you don't want to auction your crafty item? Perhaps you want it to be distributed to one of the affected families (or single people!), once the rebuilding process is underway/complete. That's okay too. In fact that is just GREAT! You can drop off your handmade donation to a number of (growing) collection points. See the list in the left hand column.

If you know of a business in your area that might serve as a collection point - ask them and let us know! We will do regular pick ups (in case they get inundated). We want to make it easy for people to give, so we need drop-off points in the Western, Eastern and Northern Suburbs too.

It will be quite a while before the donated items are distributed - as the timing is not appropriate at the moment - but that gives you more time to make, right?!

We'd encourage you to get together and make with friends, or get school and community groups going on this project. We want affected people to know that we were thinking of them and making plans to help them right from the get-go. So make LOTS of nice things, please!

And auction them! Or donate them! And tell us about it here! So we can let everyone know how you are helping (and how great you are!)

xx Pip
