Calling all quilters!

.

Anna, a member of the Waverley Patchworkers let us know about a call out to all quilters from the Guild President:
Many of us are wanting to help, and for the moment, money is what the victims of the bushfire are needing. But as time goes on, we feel that it would be helpful to provide as many people as possible with a quilt, symbol of love, comfort, caring, warmth, and compassion. If you have a quilt that you don't need anymore, one that you have just finished for no particular reason, one that just needs binding maybe,(and you can bind it quickly) and you are happy to donate it, please get it to one of the quilt shops listed below.

Do you have some fabric at home that you could make up into a quick quilt? Perhaps you have wadding that you might like to donate. Waverley has quite a bit of fabric, but we are short of wadding. ...

With all the quilt groups in Victoria, and beyond, surely we can provide at least one quilt for every family who lost their home.

These are shops where you can drop off quilts:-

Somerset Patchwork 491 High St Rd Mt Waverley

Lilly Patches 159 Boronia Rd Boronia

Chandlers Cottage 17 Keys Rd Beaumaris

Foothills Fabric 1567 Burwood H'way Tecoma

Needles & Pins 102 Melbourne Hill Rd Warrandyte

Sandlyn House Mooroolbark (From here they are going direct to the Alexandra quilt group and will be given to families who are camped in tents and are feeling the cold at night!)

For more information please contact WaverleyPatchworkers:

info(at)waverleypatchworkers(dot)com(dot)au.

And if you would like to see some of the beautiful quilts that have already headed off to provide some much need comfort & warmth, then pop over here.

.

Did your Nan make a ripper sponge, do you make an excellent chicken soup, have you a scone recipe that's been passed on through generations, are you known for you potato salad recipe at BBQs. You are...then get that recipe to me quick smart.

Handmade Help is compiling a fundraising recipe book -
Homemade – The Handmade Help Cookbook. All proceeds from 'Homemade' will go to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal via the Red Cross. 'Homemade' will be available as a PDF, downloadable upon purchase. We'll let you know where to buy it as soon as it's completed.

In news just to hand, Loobylu's Claire will design the cover, which is rad! We're also seeking other artwork to make this super special and fun to read/look at. We're not limiting this to artists and designers - get your kids wrangling the textas too!

We will be seeking a print sponsor (if you know anyone go hit them up!) as we will be printing hard copies to distribute to those that lost their homes in the fires.

Submissions of recipes and artwork are encouraged from any Handmade Help readers - this is a GLOBAL community project. Lisa, Gilly, Pip and the team will assist with editing - in case we get more then we can actually include in the book. We'll be doing our best to include everyone's work, however, so PLEASE contribute!

So to sum up:
Send your recipes in a word document to the email below - with your link or name below the recipe title
Let us know a little bit about why you chose that recipe
Send us your artwork (or your kid's artwork) - the theme for artwork is : 'Eating Together'
Email contact is : handmaderecipes@gmail.com - Gilly and Lisa are co-ordinating this part of Handmade Help. Any other suggestions or input are welcome!
Let us know if you would like to help with formatting the recipes - we need people who have access to Microsoft Publisher - they can liaise with Gilly and Lisa.

Go..now..off you go...

Salvos Require Volunteers - ThIs Saturday, Sunday and Monday

.

via email tonight:

Volunteer to Help the Salvos for a few hours sorting and packing

I am working at the Salvation Army for a few weeks assisting with the Bushfire Appeal. The community response has been amazing and there is so much that has been donated which is brilliant - however............ it is all going to the central warehouse in Noble Park to be sorted prior to being sent to the most needed areas. This is where you can help

I am coordinating volunteers over this weekend to work short shifts and really help a worthwhile cause. You will be asked to simply pack boxes and sort clothes into summer/ winter girls/boys pack tins of food etc

The location is 400 Princes Hwy, Noble Park.
If you are coming down Princess HWY going towards Dandenong it is on the Left hand side just prior to Chandler Road (There is a Mc Donald's on the corner) You will see a big Salvos Store sign turn into the carpark there or park in the service lane.

The shift are Saturday 14 Feb 9.30 - 1.30
Saturday 14 Feb 1.00 - 5.00pm
or
Sunday 15 Feb 10.30-2.30
or
Monday NIGHT 6.30-9.30
(There is a huge Convoy of Semi Trailers arriving Monday Night form WA and the Salvos simply don't have the staff to assist with the unpacking of the Trucks - whilst most of it will be done with Folk Lifts it will still need sorting etc

I will also organise a BBQ throughout the shifts. I am looking for anyone who can donate sausages, bread, onions, cheese or tomato sauce. Please direct me to anyone you know (or just bring a loaf of bread with you on the shift and that would be brilliant)

If any one you know would also like to donate goods get them to give them to you and bring them to the warehouse when you are volunteering.

It is a really worthwhile cause. Not all of us have been in a position to donate financially however, this is a way you can absolutely donate your time and skill which is vital to the operation running.

Volunteers must be over 18 years (just simply as there are too many OH & S issues with Folk lifts and trucks) so unfortunately younger people will not be able to assist unless they are willing to come and cook the BBQ - which would also be a massive help

Please SMS or call me tomorrow if you can assist (I wont have access to my email tomorrow only tonight and tomorrow night). You will all be asked to sign a volunteer form - which I have attached) WHICH WILL ONLY BE USED AS A ONCE OFF FOR THIS CAUSE UNLESS YOU WRITE OTHERWISE ON THE FORM - The Salvos require it for legal reasons. If you can print it and bring it filled in on your shift excellent - if not don't stress I will have blank ones with me.

Please forward this to anyone friends, family, work colleagues etc who may also be able to assist. It is better if they call me or sms me so I can make sure are covering the shifts in the best possible way and that we don't have too many people turn up at once and feel unneeded.

Thanks heaps for all your support and hope to see you at one of the shifts as I will be there volunteering for all of them.

Say your prayers and assist in the best way you can

Look forward to hearing from you

Help Needed - Handmade Horticulture

.

We need a couple of green-thumbed smart people to take the reins on Handmade Horticulture. We think new plants mark new beginnings - and will be greatly needed.

Please let us know via email if you are a confident, experienced gardener with a knowledge of the types of plants suitable for the affected area and other such green things. You should be an experienced blogger too.

This project will run within the Handmade Help main blog - but may need an offsite blog of it's own.

We will appoint you helpers as required. This is a long term commitment - the project will run for 6 months at least.

Thank you.

re-stash a crafter

.

WE ARE CURRENTLY FULL TO THE BRIM!
THANK YOU ALL.
WE'LL LET YOU KNOW IF WE NEED MORE SUPPLIES
.
Keep an eye on the blog for specific requests, but otherwise hold onto your stuff for now.

A crafter without a stash is a like a child without a toy - it just shouldn't be. As I knit away on toys to give to families I'm not just making something for them, I'm processing my own sadness too.

There will be a lot of crafters out there who have lost the means to craft, who will be starting from scratch. Knitters without needles, sewers without thread, felters without fibre. They'll need their craft more than ever while they cope with the stress of rebuilding their lives.

Most of us crafters have more stash than we really need and duplicates of things we could afford to give. We can help in the way crafters have always helped each other, by passing on the tools of our trade.

Pull together some crafting supplies and make a re-stash kit. Something like:

  • yarn, knitting needles, yarn needle and little scissors
  • yarn, crochet hooks, yarn needle and little scissors
  • fabric, threads, needles, pins, scissors
  • felt, threads, needles, pins, scissors
  • rovings, drop spindle, bobbins
  • canvass or linen, embroidery hoop, threads, needles and little scissors
Free downloadable patterns (no breaking copyright please!), project bags, sewing boxes or needle books would also be helpful. Think primarily about portable and handwork projects for now - we might branch out to bigger things as we progress.

Make sure you clearly label your donation with re-stash a crafter, and the type of craft suitable for your kit (knit, crochet, felting, sewing, toy-making, embroidery etc).

And you can help too by finding people who need new stash. If you know anyone who has lost their stash, or know anyone who knows anyone, or you know people who work directly with people in affected communities, please let us know. You can also print an A4 flyer with our contact details so someone who wants to get re-stashed can contact us.

Please contact me directly soozs[dot]com[at]gmail[dot]com with questions or suggestions, especially if you have personal contacts in affected communities where people might benefit from crafting supplies.

Kits can be dropped off at the drop off points listed in the sidebar, but they will all end up at Meet Me at Mike's, so if you are mailing in or can drop off directly that would be great.

Keep donating money, of course - but let's make a plan to get some special new things into the homes of those that are rebuilding or resettling.

Suzie contacted Handmade Help with a GREAT idea. She suggested we all donate some of our craft stashes to Handmade Help - to pass on to crafters who have lost all their craft supplies.

Suzie will be House Captain for co-ordinating this part of the Handmade Help appeal. Email her at soozs(dot)com(at)gmail(dot)com with your thoughts, queries or offers of assistance. Keep those emails short and to the point so we don't get overloaded.

She'll post here soon with her thoughts on what you should donate and other details.

Craft items can be donated at the collection points listed in the side column. Or simply mail them to us at Meet Me at Mike's.

ALSO - If anyone has any tips on storage options for us down the track, it would be appreciated. At the moment we are fine, though.

WA TOY DRIVE TO HELP VICTORIA'S YOUNG BUSH FIRE VICTIMS PLAY TO HEAL

A second Christmas for children affected by the bush fires in regional Victoria is being organised by Western Australia based kids cross-media company, artistsAWAKEproductions. While current relief focuses on providing basic services like food, clothing, shelter, and medical aid to people affected by the disaster, we are calling upon the people of WA to help provide for the special needs of children. The "Play to Heal" Initiative was commenced after consulting with Government and Non-Government Organisations in Victoria to ensure donations would help the victims and could be distributed without diverting resources from critical needs.

The donations of new or near-new toys and games for ages 0 to 10 are being collected from two locations:

13 Glyde Street, Mosman Park (Mosman Video) - 9 to 15 February

7 Amersham Crescent, East Butler (East Butler Primary School) - 9 to 13 February (last collection 3pm TODAY)

It is important that toys and games be in new or excellent condition and not too large or heavy so they can be easily shipped. Donations should not require electricity and batteries should be included if necessary. Ideal items include board games, deflated sports balls, soft toys, cards, pads of paper and crayons/pencils.

For more information about the toy drive, please email: info@artistsawake.com
